Power consumption in Andhra Pradesh has surged due to a significant rise in temperatures in the last few weeks, hovering around 280 Million Units daily, according to Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar.

He said the weather conditions have been fluctuating even after the onset of the monsoon, and the temperatures have steadily increased, resulting in a spurt in demand.

However, steps were taken to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, and disruptions were promptly attended to by the staff of the power utilities. The inconvenience to consumers was being minimised through coordination among the local public representatives, district officials and officials of the power utilities.

Mr. Ravi said the government remained committed to its assurance of not increasing electricity tariffs for five years, while highlighting the implementation of a true-down mechanism. He said that the government was strengthening the transmission network by augmenting AP-Transco’s infrastructure and expediting the construction of new substations and transformers across the State.

Referring to the State’s industrial growth, Mr. Ravi Kumar said the government was expanding electricity infrastructure to meet the requirements of upcoming industries, adding that power sector projects worth around ₹6,000 crore were under various stages of implementation.

Further, the Minister said the government has not increased electricity tariffs during the past two years and entered its third year without a tariff revision. He alleged that the power sector was weakened during the YSR Congress Party rule and the coalition government has put it back on the tracks.
