India on Thursday (March 5, 2026) condoled the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signing the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy on behalf of the government of India.

Mr. Misri also conveyed New Delhi’s message of sympathy to the Iranian Ambassador

Khamenei and five of his family members, including his infant granddaughter, as well as his top advisors, were killed in an U.S.-Israeli strike at the start of the conflict on February 28.

Though India called for resolution of the West Asia crisis through dialogue and diplomacy, it chose not to react to Khamenei’s killing. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Syed Abbas Araghchi on February 28, however, there was no mention in any of the readouts of a condolence message or the condemnation of the strikes in the heart of Tehran.

Mr. Misri’s visit to the Iranian Embassy and signing of the condolence book assumed significance as the Union government had come under attack from Opposition parties for its silence on Khamenei’s killing.
