This move comes as the Opposition is stepping up its demand for the removal of Mr. Kumar from the post.

The Constitution gives the CEC a high degree of protection against removal. Article 324(5) states that the CEC can be removed from office “in like manner and on the like grounds as a Judge of the Supreme Court.” This means that the CEC can be removed only on the grounds of proved misbehaviour or incapacity and through the parliamentary procedure prescribed for the removal of a Supreme Court judge.

“After this Public Impeachment, we will hold a Dilli Chalo March against Vote Chori culminating at Ramleela Maidan on November 1st, where at least a million concerned citizens will participate,” said Mr. Venugopal in his post.

Mr. Venugopal has said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to all INDIA Bloc parties and requested their leaders and members to be present in Delhi during this period “in full force”.
