In an anti-climax of sorts, a gang of five robbed a thief of gold worth ₹1.75 lakh in east Bengaluru’s Avalahalli — just minutes after he had stolen the gold from a house. Frustrated over losing the stolen valuables, the thief went on to commit two more house thefts. Ten days later, the police arrested all five accused.

The first accused has been identified as Isayi Raja alias Kunta, 30, a resident of Amruthahalli. The members of the other gang have been identified as Mounesh Rao, Darshan M., Chandan R., and Sunil M., all aged between 20 and 23.

The incident occurred on November 22. Raja allegedly noticed that a family in Manduru near Avalahalli had left their house late at night. He entered their house through an ajar window.

“After stealing valuables, the accused went to a nearby graveyard where he had parked his bike. Another gang of four persons noticed him, intercepted him, and robbed him in the name of questioning,” an officer investigating the case told The Hindu. After the robbers left, Raja decided to target more houses.

On November 24, the family that lost their valuables filed a complaint, following which the police arrested Raja using technical clues from the crime scene and CCTV footage from nearby areas. Investigations revealed that Raja has seven cases registered against him in five different police stations in the city.

During interrogation, the police were left amused after learning about the sequence of events. Officers returned to the crime scene, retraced Raja’s movements, and gathered leads about the gang that had robbed him. Days later, all four members of the second gang were booked for robbery and arrested by the Avalahalli police.
