Bodhan AI, a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education incubated within IIT Madras and supported by the Union Ministry of Education, along with AI4Bharat, a research lab in IIT Madras, have launched four foundational AI models for Indian languages.

The models will be made available to the technology and education ecosystem through open-weight releases and hosted APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). The suite of AI models spans four core capabilities: speech recognition, speech generation, machine translation, and optical character recognition.

With this, government partners and public institutions can now potentially deploy multilingual AI capabilities for education and other public-service applications using sovereign infrastructure, a press release stated. EdTEch companies would now be able to integrate Indian language AI capabilities into their products through APIs without having to develop foundational models from scratch, it added.
