A 22-year-old MTech student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) allegedly ended his life in his hostel room on the campus in Sadashivanagar on Thursday, the police said.

The death comes 15 days after a 19-year-old BTech student took his life in his hostel room on August 6. A handwritten note was recovered from his room.

The deceased in the latest case has been identified as Gopal, a native of West Bengal. The death came to light after his fellow hostel mates visited his room.

A senior police officer told The Hindu a note had been recovered from the room, citing personal reasons for the extreme step.

The Sadashivanagar police have registered an unnatural death report and sent the body for post-mortem. A senior officer said further investigation would continue based on their findings.

“The family of the deceased has been informed about the incident, and the body will be handed over to them after the post-mortem,” the officer said.

The institute expressed grief over the student’s death and conveyed condolences to his family and friends.

“We are committed to ensuring that the IISc campus is a safe and inclusive space for everyone,” the institute said. The IISc has urged all students, faculty members, and staff in need of support to immediately reach out to mental health professionals to seek help through its 24×7 emergency call service.
