New Delhi:

Summer in India changes how people eat and drink. You reach for whatever feels cooling, quick, easy. Iced coffee, iced tea, both show up more often once the heat kicks in.

But there is another layer now. People are thinking about weight, calories, small daily habits. What seems like just a drink can quietly add up over time. So the question comes up. Between iced coffee and iced tea, which one actually fits better if weight loss is the goal?

Iced coffee vs iced tea: What really sets them apart

At a basic level, both drinks look similar. Cold, refreshing, caffeinated. But what goes into them makes all the difference.

Iced tea is made from tea leaves and usually mixed with water, which keeps it lighter. Iced coffee, on the other hand, comes from roasted coffee beans and often includes milk, sugar or even whipped cream depending on how it is prepared.

That is where the gap begins.

Calories and caffeine: Small numbers, real impact

If you look at plain versions, the calorie difference is not huge, but it is still there.

  • Iced tea usually sits around 2 to 5 calories when unsweetened
  • Iced coffee ranges from 5 to 10 calories, and goes much higher with cream or syrups

Caffeine works differently too.

  • Iced coffee delivers a stronger caffeine hit
  • Iced tea has a milder, more gradual release

So one gives you a sharper boost, the other feels steadier.

What these drinks actually contain

Both drinks have compounds that can influence how your body responds.

Iced tea:

  • Contains catechins and antioxidants
  • Helps with hydration since it is mostly water-based
  • Green tea variants are linked to improved metabolism and fat oxidation

Iced coffee:

  • Contains caffeine and chlorogenic acid
  • Can provide a quick energy lift
  • May help with short-term metabolic increase

Some research, including studies referenced in the Adv Nutr journal, suggests green tea may support fat burning. But not everyone tolerates it well, so choices may vary.

How iced tea and iced coffee affect weight loss

Both drinks can support weight loss, but the effect depends heavily on how they are consumed.

Iced tea:

  • Rich in antioxidants like EGCG, especially in green tea
  • Lower caffeine means a slower cortisol response, which may help with stress-related weight gain
  • Easier to drink without sugar in hot weather

But added sugars can quickly undo the benefits.

Iced coffee:

  • Strong caffeine content may suppress appetite
  • Can slightly boost metabolism in the short term
  • Works better when consumed black and without added sugar

However, once you add syrups, cream or sugar, the calorie count rises quickly.

Things people often overlook

This is where habits matter.

Iced coffee tends to be consumed with milk, sugar or flavourings, which increases calories without much notice. It is also easier to overconsume because of its caffeine kick.

Iced tea, especially in India, is more often consumed in a simpler form. Unsweetened or lightly flavoured versions are easier to stick to, which makes it a more practical option for daily intake.

What works better if weight loss is the goal

If you are looking at it purely from a weight loss perspective, iced tea has a slight edge.

It is lighter, easier to keep low in calories, and still offers some metabolic support. Green or herbal iced teas tend to be better options.

That said, iced coffee is not off the table. It can still work if consumed in moderation and without added sugars. The key is how you prepare it.

The simple takeaway

There is no single perfect drink.

Unsweetened iced tea is generally the better choice for weight loss, especially in the heat. But iced coffee can fit in too, if you keep it simple.

At the end of the day, it comes down to small decisions. What you add, how often you drink it, and whether it fits into your overall calorie intake.
