A holiday was declared for the Government Girls’ High School at Thripunithura in Ernakulam on Thursday (September 11, 2025) after the carcass of a stray dog was discovered on the campus.

Shortly after the incident was reported, officials of the Animal Husbandry department and the Thripunithura municipality inspected the site. The carcass was found in the morning.

The school campus has been a haven for stray dogs for some time now. Following reports that the carcass was that of a suspected rabid dog, the rest of the dogs found on the campus were caught and shifted to an observation centre. It was found that dogs had proliferated along the shrubby surroundings of an abandoned building on the campus.

The dog found dead was reportedly foaming at the mouth and had charged at passers-by the previous day. There have been no reports of either students or staff being bitten by the dog. Staff who reached the school in the morning found the carcass, which was being bitten by two other stray dogs.

Dogs moved to the shelter will be observed for the next 10 days for potential symptoms of rabies, said the Animal Husbandry Deputy Director. The official added that stray dogs within the municipal limits would be vaccinated in the coming days.

Stray dog menace is acute in Thripunithura town. Stray dogs charging at two-wheeler riders is widely reported.
