The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed the General Education Principal Secretary to take steps to frame legislation for regulating the use of mobile phone and screens by children up to the age of 18. A high-level committee comprising Principal Secretaries and Secretaries of various departments and the State Police Chief has been proposed to take forward this initiative. It is imperative that the government draw up laws on age limits regulating screen time of children, the Commission said.
The Commission, consisting of Chairperson K.V. Manoj Kumar and member Shajesh Bhaskar P., initiated suo motu proceedings based on newspaper reports about an incident at a school in Anakkara, Palakkad, last year. Additional related complaints were also considered.
