The day-long drama over K. Sudhakaran’s candidature from Kannur triggered tension even as reports emerged that former Kannur Mayor T.O. Mohanan was being considered for the seat.

Since early in the day, a large number of party workers gathered outside the District Congress Committee office, raising slogans in favour of Mr. Sudhakaran and warning that they would not cooperate with the party if he was denied a ticket.

The protest briefly turned into celebrations after reports surfaced that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) might concede the demand and allot the seat to Mr. Sudhakaran. His supporters distributed sweets and raised slogans, though the AlCC did not take a final decision till evening.

The protesting party workers alleged that the shortlisting of Mr. Mohanan despite a Vigilance probe against him was unacceptable.

Congress worker Shibu Fernandez said fielding Mr. Sudhakaran was the “wish of party workers and the public.” He claimed that the senior leader had been promised the seat, and that the leadership should honour the commitment.

However, the developments triggered mixed reactions within the district unit. While Mr. Sudhakaran’s supporters celebrated reports favouring him, a section of party workers expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the prolonged uncertainty had demoralised the cadre.

Meanwhile, the party leadership has begun efforts to restore unity in the district unit.
