Have been put under house arrest to prevent from going to Baruipur, says Mamata

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee claimed late on Sunday (July 5, 2026) evening that she had had been put under house arrest to prevent her from going to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, where a 12-year-old was allegedly raped and killed.

Violence erupted in Baruipur on Sunday (July 5, 2026) over the rape and murder of a girl and there was a large deployment of police in the area to control the situation. Outside the residence of former Chief Minister in Kolkata’s Kalighat, police personnel were seen marching on Sunday (July 5, 2026) evening. The rape and murder of a minor at Baruipur, which has enraged locals is the first major challenge for the BJP government that has promised to ensure safety of women.

“The incident at Baruipur has taken a dangerous turn because the people cannot take it anymore. Outside my home, thousands of police personnel are marching from one side of the road to another. I have heard that we have been put under house arrest… even though the police are not telling us that,” Ms. Banerjee said. The former Chief Minister who was surrounded by her supporters said that she wanted to go Baruipur and meet the family members of the victim.

Several Trinamool Congress leaders also alleged that Mamata Banerjee was put under house arrest.

“Our Chairperson, @MamataOfficial, wanted to visit Baruipur. Upon learning this, a massive deployment of police personnel and barricades was put in place outside her residence to prevent her from leaving. Despite these attempts to stop her, our demand remains unchanged: #JusticeForBaruipur. Didi stands firmly with the victim’s family and is committed to ensuring they receive justice,” the Trinamool Congress posted on social media.

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in a social media post said that he spoke to the family members of 12- year-old victim.

“No amount of political influence or pressure should be allowed to shield the accused or obstruct the course of justice. I will do everything within my capacity that justice is delivered swiftly and fairly,” Mr. Banerjee said.
