The 58th Inter-IIT Sports Meet 2025 got off to a grand start at the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT-T) campus at Yerpedu, here on Sunday. The event is hosted by IIT Tirupati, with support from IIT Madras and IIT Hyderabad units.
IIT-T Director K.N. Satyanarayana joined Olympian and Arjuna award-winning weightlifter Sathish Sivalingam, and handed over the torch to a player, who lit the flame. Sports contingents from all the 23 IITs across the country took part in the march past. The band from Veritas Sainik School played patriotic songs that added excitement to the event.
Recalling his days at the IIT-Madras campus as a student, Mr. Satyanarayana explained that such gatherings would not only help the students excel in sports, but also provide a sense of participation, team spirit, tolerance and leadership skills.
Mr. Sivalingam hailed India’s growing footprint on international sports and called ‘Khelo India’ and the emerging sports policies as having the potential to identify and promote talent from the countryside. “The impressive sports infrastructure will help in creating a new breed of future sports champions,” he said, adding that such events would help lay focus on emerging areas like sports management, high-performance sports and allied areas.
Chess, tennis and weightlifting events unfolded on the first day. Dean (Student Affairs) N.N. Murthy, Sports Officer Iyyappan and students participated.
