The State government has granted administrative sanction for the construction of a new 190-million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant in Aluva, which is expected to resolve drinking water shortage in the Kochi Corporation and nearby municipalities and grama panchayats.

The Water Resources department has accorded administrative sanction for ₹523 crore for the project. It will be implemented as part of the Kerala Urban Water Supply Improvement Project, aided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on Wednesday.

The new plant is expected to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to the Kochi Corporation, the municipalities of Aluva, Eloor, Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, and Maradu, as well as the grama panchayats of Keezhmad, Edathala, Choornikkara, Njarackal, Elamkunnapuzha, Mulavukad, Nayarambalam, Varappuzha, Cheranalloor, Kumbalam, Chellanam, Kumbalangi, and Kadamakudy.

The project is scheduled to be completed within 15 months. It will be constructed on 1.57 hectares near the existing water treatment plant in Aluva, the CMO said.
