Govt. medical college teachers’ forum to intensify protest

The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) organised dharna and protest meetings in all government medical colleges in the State and in front of the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) office in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday, as part of its plans to intensify the agitation raising various long-standing demands.

An indefinite boycott of all academic activities commenced on Thursday in government medical colleges, which is likely to affect medical, dental, paramedical and nursing students. Theory, practical and internal examinations were not conducted, the KGMCTA said in a release in Thiruvananthapuram.

Doctors have been protesting the government’s refusal to disburse the pay revision arrears to medical college doctors, even when pay revision arrears in full were given to other State government employees.

They are also protesting against the government’s unfulfilled assurance that anomalies in the entry-level pay would be rectified. This is hindering the induction of qualified young doctors into medical colleges, the KGMCTA said.

Doctors will stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 27. On that day, as a token protest, OP services will be boycotted and non-emergency surgeries and other procedures will be stopped across all government medical colleges. The association said that from February 2 its members would boycott OP services indefinitely.
