The government has taken the right stand in the Sabarimala gold theft case, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan said on Friday, asserting that action against former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president A. Padmakumar, who was arrested in connection with the case, would be taken only after the charges against him were clearly established.
Addressing the media at an event organised by the Kannur Press Club, Mr. Govindan said that the probe by the special investigation team (SIT) would take months to conclude, and that the issues related to Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, should not be linked with the Sabarimala case. The Congress’ action against Mr. Mamkootathil was only a face-saving exercise, he alleged and accused the party leadership of protecting him.
Mr. Govindan said the SIT, under the High Court’s supervision, was working to bring all culprits before the law, and that “not even a grain of gold from Sabaraimala would be lost.”
He predicted a resounding win for the LDF in the local body elections and claimed that the front would wrest back the Kannur Corporation.
Replying to a query about the LDF fielding candidates with criminal cases and those convicted for attacking the police, he said that individuals convicted in various cases could still contest and that being arraigned in political cases was not unusual.
