Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday (March 5, 2026) that the government was investing around ₹6,000 crore in construction of substations as part of its efforts to strengthen the power distribution network in Andhra Pradesh.

Replying to a question raised by MLA Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathiraju regarding the construction of a 220/132 kV substation at Venugopalapuram in Vizianagaram district, the Minister said the proposed project was currently under the re-tendering process.

He said efforts were on to expedite the construction works and ensure smooth implementation of the project and informed that the substation was expected to be completed by March 2027.

The Minister said specifically in Vizianagaram district, two 220 kV power projects worth about ₹46 crore were presently under implementation.

Providing a broader perspective on the State’s power infrastructure development, Mr. Ravi Kumar said the government was sanctioning 33/11 kV substations in areas experiencing heavy electricity load across the State and that 200 substations were currently being constructed in different regions in the State to meet the growing demand for electricity in the future.

Addressing another aspect of the query, the Minister informed that implementing an underground power cabling system in Vizianagaram town would involve significant expenditure and the feasibility of such a system would therefore be examined based on actual necessity and the availability of funds.

The Minister noted that the number of industrial, commercial, domestic, and agricultural power consumers was increasing every year and said in view of the rising demand, the State government remained committed to expanding and strengthening the power infrastructure, particularly through construction of new substations to ensure reliable electricity supply in the coming years.
