The Chevayur police in Kozhikode have taken into custody a native of West Bengal, who is suspected to have burgled 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments and ₹10,000 from the house of a doctor working at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, recently.
Police sources on Thursday (October 9, 2025) said that Tapas Kumar Saha, the accused, was nabbed by a special team formed under Deputy Police Commissioner Arun K. Pavithran. The burglary is believed to have taken place early in the morning on September 28. Gayathri, the doctor, was out of town since September 11 as she had gone to her native place in Thiruvananthapuram, and her house at Chevarambalam had been locked since then. The burglary came to her notice when she returned on September 28 and subsequently filed a complaint.
The police thereafter procured CCTV visuals from nearby areas and identified the accused, who was seen reaching the house at around 1.30 a.m. and returning around 3.30 a.m. Police sources claimed that Saha hid himself in an under-construction house later and left Chevarambalam at around 6 a.m. However, they could not identify the autorickshaw by which Saha is reported to have fled the area. CCTV footage from various bus stands and the railway station revealed that he had been roaming around several residential localities in the city earlier.
The inquiry team later got in touch with the Cyber Cell and came to know that he was a native of West Bengal. They also learnt that Saha had camped in Ranaghat, a city in Nadia district of the State. The inquiry team flew to West Bengal, and Saha was later taken into custody with the help of the local police. Sources claimed that he had travelled by train from West Bengal to Coimbatore and from there to Kozhikode. Saha is reported to have reached Chevarambalam on foot and fled to West Bengal by train after the burglary. The police said that he was a drug addict and a suspect in many theft cases.
