The Greater Chennai Police invoked the Goondas Act against B.T. Arasakumar, who was recently arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for allegedly cheating private schools across Tamil Nadu of about ₹100 crore by promising them government approval.

The CCB arrested Arasakumar last month on a complaint filed by Elangovan, secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu. The complainant alleged that Arasakumar had projected himself as the president of an unregistered body called Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, and along with a few of his associates, collected large sums of money from private schools.

They had promised the private schools that they would secure permanent recognition, school upgrade approval, and other permissions. But they failed to get the approval and did not return the money either, according to the complaint.

Arasakumar has been lodged at the Central Prison at Puzhal. The CCB has received more than 40 complaints against him. Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj issued an order detaining Arasakumar under the Goondas Act.
