Gold ornaments worth around ₹10 lakh kept in the custody of the Karipur police station after being handed over by members of the public have gone missing. An internal inquiry has pointed to the alleged involvement of a suspended former Station House Officer (SHO).

The ornaments, including chains, earrings, a ring and a bracelet, were handed over to the police after being found at different places, including Calicut International Airport, Karipur. They were kept in an almirah at the station so they could be returned to their owners on production of proof.

A report submitted by the DySP, Kondotty, to the District Police Chief confirmed the disappearance. The ornaments had been received by the station over several years. The loss was first flagged in a Special Branch report in February.

An inquiry by a team led by the DySP found the alleged involvement of the former SHO, who is under suspension in another disciplinary case. Police sources said the officer allegedly admitted during questioning that the ornaments were in his possession. He reportedly told the inquiry team that they had come into his custody by mistake and offered to return them.

The report will be forwarded to the police higher ups for further action.

Meanwhile, Muslim Youth League workers marched to the Karipur police station on Sunday (June 28, 2026) demanding a criminal case against the former SHO and a special investigation team to investigate the gold disappearance. The police stopped the protesters in front of the station.
