The Andhra Pradesh government has swung into action following ‘public outrage’ over the birthday celebrations of YSRCP president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The government took a serious view of the complaints received by the Police Department over the alleged violent and disturbing activities by the YSRCP leaders and cadres, which triggered a ‘public outrage’.
Cases have been registered against 13 persons, including a sarpanch with allegiance to the YSRCP, while several people have been detained. The birthday celebrations triggering controversy were reported from Puttaparthi, Dharmavaram, and Gopalapuram, with the authorities concerned removing ‘offensive’ flex boards and initiating legal action, according to the CMO officials.
According to information, the government received reports indicating that some YSRCP activists resorted to activities intended to intimidate citizens. At several places, pregnant women were allegedly assaulted, while animal sacrifices were carried out in public view, and the blood was reportedly smeared on banners and portraits of Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Flex boards depicting Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy, armed with knives, with slogans encouraging destruction, were reportedly put up.
The police received multiple complaints from citizens, leading to the registration of cases. YSRCP cadres reportedly performed animal sacrifices in Kalyanadurgam, Uravakonda, and Singanamala constituencies.
In Raptadu constituency, the birthday celebrations reportedly involved sacrificing a sheep and pouring blood on a former MLA’s banner. A YSRCP worker allegedly kicked a pregnant woman named Sandhya Rani, reportedly distressed by the noise from bow-and-arrow demonstrations. He was taken into police custody.
The Police Department has warned that strict action will be taken against such activities, the officials said.
