The Ijoor police of Bengaluru South district on Saturday arrested a 55-year-old police constable attached to Lokayukta for allegedly threatening and extorting money from government officials by posing as a Lokayukta sleuth.

Based on a complaint filed by the Child Development Planning Officer from Magadi, a team of police tracked down the accused, identified as Murugeppa, charging him with extortion and impersonation.

According to the police, Murugeppa was a police constable with the Lokayukta, and he was dismissed from service for his corrupt practices.

Exploiting his expertise, Murugeppa allegedly started an extortion racket and obtained a list of officials and called them by posing as the Deputy Superintendent of Police. He would call the officials, threaten to conduct raids on them, and later extort money.

A probe revealed that he had as many as 46 extortion cases pending against him across the State. The police have seized three mobile phones and nine SIMs which he had allegedly obtained from different companies with fake documents to use it to commit the offence.
