Enhancing road connectivity in Kerala, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced work on developing five more national highway projects in the State.

In a communication to the State, the NHAI has informed that the procedures for preparing the project document for developing five more new national highways have been initiated, said Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas here on Saturday.

The project document will be prepared to upgrade Ramanattukara-Kozhikode Airport Road, Kannur Airport Road (Chovva-Mattannur), Kodungallur-Angamaly, and Vypeen-Matsyafed Tourist Office Road to national highway status.

Along with this, a project document is being prepared for the construction of the Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha bypasses on the Kochi-Madurai National Highway.

Tender process

The NHAI has started the tender process to select an agency to prepare the project document. The project document for the new national highways is being prepared, considering the demand of the State government, said Mr. Riyas.

A recent meeting led by the Chief Minister has requested the NHAI to upgrade more roads to the national highways-standard in the State. A detailed proposal for this was also submitted.

The development of these roads has been a long-pending demand of the people in the respective regions.

The project document is prepared to upgrade the 12-km Ramanattukara-Kozhikode Airport Road and the 20-km Kodungallur-Angamaly (Western Ernakulam Bypass) Road to a four-lane road. The 30-km Kannur Airport Road and the 13-km Vypeen-Matsyafed Road are planned to be developed into a 2-lane paved shoulder. The Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha bypasses will also be developed as two-lane paved shoulders. There will be continuous interventions of the State to ensure these projects are implemented at the earliest, the Minister added.
