The Central Division Cybercrime Police have registered an FIR against several social media users for allegedly promoting obscene videos that were going viral on social media platforms.
Based on the complaint filed by a social media user, the police have charged the accused under various sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and initiated probe into 28 links where the accused posted clips and screenshots of obscene videos on their social media accounts.
The accused allegedly invited users to comment or send direct messages to access the full videos and also uploaded links on their bio. They allegedly used platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to post and promote such content.
The links shared by the accused reportedly redirected users directly to obscene websites. The police said such posts were drawing people towards pornographic content, which was a serious concern as social media was used by people of all age groups.
Officials noted that out of curiosity, some users click on these links, resulting in children and others being exposed to obscene websites. Citing this as a serious social issue, a private complaint was filed, based on which an FIR has been registered.
The case has been registered at the Central Cybercrime Police Station. The police have booked 28 social media accounts and launched an investigation.
According to the police, the media users are involved in illegal activities just to promote their account and increase followers. “This is a dangerous trend and leading to immoral activities which attract strict action,” a police officer said.
