Festive buy, GST rate cut drive record car sales

Driven by festive demand and a boost from the recent GST rate cut, India’s auto industry witnessed record-breaking monthly sales, with Tata Motors overtaking Mahindra & Mahindra in overall volumes. 

However, SUVs continued to dominate buyer preferences across brands

Maruti Suzuki posted a robust 10.5% year-on-year growth, achieving its highest-ever domestic sales at 1,80,675 units. 

Compact segment that includes Baleno, Celerio, Dzire rose to 76,143 units, up from 65,948. SUVs such as Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara climbed 9.8% to 77,571 units, compared to 70,644 last year.

However, sales of small cars such as Alto and S-Presso declined to 9,067 units, down from 10,687 in October 2024- a decline of 15%.

Tata Motors recorded a strong 27% growth, selling 61,134 units, up from 48,131. SUVs were the standout performers, contributing 47,000 units – a record 77% share of its monthly sales.

Kia India also saw impressive gains, with a 30% year-on-year growth and 29,556 units sold. The Sonet led the charge, accounting for 12,745 units.

Toyota reported sales of 42,892 units, a significant jump from 30,845 in the same period last year.
