A 55-year-old farmer and his two sons were electrocuted after they stepped on an illegal live electric fence erected to prevent wild boars from entering the farmland in Ramanayanikuppam village near Amirthi Zoological Park in Vellore.

Police said the deceased were identified as S. Janakiraman, farmer, J. Vikas (25) and J. Jeeva (22). They are residents in Ramanayanikuppam village where they run a farm nursery of native plant species in a five-acre plot.

Initial inquiry revealed that along with his three sons, farmer Janakiraman went to his nursery to check saplings in a new garden they created recently. The region has been witnessing rains for the past few days due to Cyclone Ditwah.

As they were checking different plant species at various spots in the nursery, Janakiraman accidentally stepped on a snapped live electric wire in the farm nursery. After hearing a huge noise, his sons rushed to the spot to rescue their father but got electrocuted after they stepped on the same wire.

In the impact, Janakiraman and his two sons died on the spot while another son, J. Lokesh (23) was injured. Immediately, neighbours and other farmers disconnected the power supply. They also informed Veppakuppam police, who rushed to the spot. Injured Lokesh was admitted at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore. Bodies were sent to the same hospital for postmortem.

Police said that illegal electrical fencing was erected to prevent wild boars from damaging crops as the village is located at the foothills of Jawadhu Hills. A case was registered. A probe especially on those who installed the illegal fencing in the land is under way.
