Ezhilode mosque stabbing leaves three injured; suspect arrested

Three persons, including a mosque muezzin, were injured after a youth allegedly stabbed them at a mosque in Ezhilode, near Pazhayangadi, in Kannur on Wednesday (June 17) night.

The accused has been identified as Ziyad Abdulla, a native of Kasaragod and reportedly addicted to drugs.

The incident occurred around 10.45 p.m on Wednesday. The accused allegedly attempted to damage the mosque property and attacked those who intervened. The police rushed to the spot, restrained the accused and took him into custody.

The injured have been identified as Mohammed Ashiq, 24, a native of Manjeri and the mosques Muezzin, and mosque committee office–bearers Naseer Anna, 47, and K.M Sameer, 37.

All three sustained stab injuries and were admitted to the Payyannur government taluk hospital for treatment.

According to the preliminary information, the accused charged at the victims with a sharp weapon when they intervened to prevent him from vandalising the mosque.

Further investigation is under way.
