The growing interest in semiconductor design and packaging services in India, driven by talent and innovation, was aligned with the country’s push for expanding the semiconductor industry, speakers at a webinar said on Friday (April 4, 2026).

The webinar titled ‘Electronics and semiconductor careers: skills, roles, and how to get started’ was jointly presented by VIT, Vellore, and The Hindu Education Plus under the Career Path Series.

The speakers focused on how the semiconductor industry would shape the future of all industries highlighting the high-growth opportunities in the sector driven by AI boom and an ever-increasing demand for electronics.

Abhishek Chaudhary, DFT Engineer at Advanced Micro Devices Inc., said that with the focus shifting from software to hardware, students were at the exact intersection of time and opportunity. Electronics, he said, was a broad and diverse highway offering career paths.

Kanchana Bhaaskaran, Vice-Chancellor, VIT Vellore, underscored the government’s support to academic institutions and startups through massive investment schemes. The India Semiconductor Mission 2021 was launched to create chip manufacturing plants, packaging and testing units, and support startups in chip design as well as train young engineers, she said.

Sivanantham Sathasivam, Director, V-Space, VIT Vellore, said semiconductor fabrication was driven by demand for electronic goods, automotive industry, aeronautics, and other sectors, encouraging students to pursue their interests in physics, chemistry, quantum physics, and indulge in building small circuits, developing simple hardware, home automation, robotics, or weather sensors.

Abhirami R., Staff Engineer, Samsung Semiconductor India Research, Bengaluru, focused on the importance of internships and hackathons, while speaking about her on-campus experience as a student in VIT.
