The Syndicate of the University of Calicut has decided to conduct inspections at affiliated autonomous colleges every three years.
This was among the decisions taken at its meeting held on the university’s main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district on Wednesday. The inspections would be taken up by a committee of Syndicate members and subject experts.
The meeting decided to propose a detailed inquiry into the episode of 51 students getting extra marks during a moderation process. The Syndicate standing committee on exams would conduct an inquiry into 93 students graduating after getting moderation marks in an unauthorised manner.
A sum of ₹3 crore would be allocated to the Centre for Distance and Online Education in the 2026-27 financial year.
It was decided to appoint Syed Marzook Bafaqui as the university’s standing counsel in the Supreme Court. The Syndicate also approved the proposal to appoint C. Suresh Kumar as the director of the university’s publications division.
The pro-Left members, however, objected to the decision while contending that the matter was brought before the Syndicate without incorporating it as an agenda item. Relevant supporting documents were not presented during the previous meeting held on July 9. They maintained that appointments to key posts must be considered only after the Syndicate was provided with the complete agenda and all relevant records in accordance with statutory procedures and the principles of collective decision-making. The pro-Left members insisted that all policy matters requiring the Syndicate’s approval should be circulated as specific agenda items sufficiently in advance to facilitate informed deliberations.
Meanwhile, the Syndicate approved the grant of duty leave for faculty members engaged in project mode programmes to enable them to participate in academic activities and professional engagements. The meeting also approved to enhance the travelling allowance and daily allowance of students undertaking study tours at the university’s teaching departments. The meeting will continue on Thursday.
