Ernakulam continued to report the highest number of influenza infections in the State in July as well. A total of 993 cases were reported till July 27 in the district.
A total of 2,468 cases of influenza were recorded in the State in July. The disease claimed 24 lives this month. The total number of cases in the State this year stood at 5,519, with as many as 60 deaths being reported.
According to a senior Health department official, the number of H1N1 cases is high, and the public needs to follow precautionary measures to prevent such infections.
“We have continued to give recommendations and advisories to the public to follow cough etiquette, wear masks, use sanitisers, and maintain social distancing. This is essential to control the spread of infections,” said the official.
According to the official, the rise in the number of cases in the district could be due to increased disease screening and testing.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener, research cell, Indian Medical Association, Kerala State, said influenza is not to be confused with the common cold. It can cause fatal outcomes even in healthy individuals and, therefore, deserves utmost attention.
“Influenza cases rise across the country with the onset of the monsoon. The symptoms include extreme weakness, high fever, and muscle ache with or without upper respiratory symptoms. Seeking medical help without delay is key,” said Dr. Jayadevan.
Kochi’s position as a major travel hub and referral centre is one of the reasons for the district reporting more cases, he added. The commonly circulating influenza viruses are H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B, and the former two are expected to be in circulation now, he added.
Dr. Minu Mohan, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Ernakulam, said that while influenza cases are increasingly being reported, the situation has not reached an epidemic level.
“Like other viruses, influenza viruses accumulate mutations over time. This enables them to cause recurring outbreaks by evading immunity,” said Dr. Mohan.
