The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Friday (December 26, 2025) met the officials of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and sought an end to the attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country. He told the officials that protests will continue outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission if the attacks do not stop.
The BJP leader who led a five-member delegation said the authorities at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission assured him that the Bangladesh government will stand by the family of Dipu Chandra Das, killed by a mob there, and will ensure that the family members get justice.
“They [Deputy High Commission officials] told us that 10 people have been arrested and that they will not get bail,” Mr. Adhikari said. The BJP leader said the officials of the Deputy High Commission had avoided meeting him since Monday but agreed to the interaction only after he warned of a large protest outside the office.
Demonstrations are being held outside the Deputy High Commission since December 22 over the killing of Dipu Chandra Das. On December 23, the police used force on the protesters and arrested 19 people, including seven women.
The Nandigram MLA added that the “100 crore Hindus” of India cannot remain silent on the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and will come to the aid of the one-and-a-half crore Hindus there if required.
Coming down on the Trinamool Congress government for acting against protesters outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, Mr. Adhikari dubbed the government “anti- Hindu”. “Mamata Banerjee has turned the Bengal police into her personal force. It is a matter of shame,” he said. Mr. Adhikari, who held a placard with the photograph of the slain Hindu youth, said he had to come to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission because the State’s Chief Minister did not.
The Leader of Opposition said that around 1,000 protesters, including several seers, were present on Friday with him. Protests would escalate in the coming days, he said. “After the Gangasagar mela (next month), five lakh sadhus will come here. We will see then how much power the Kolkata Police have,” he said.
All protesters get bail
A court on Friday granted interim bail to 12 members of the Bangiyo Hindu Jagaran Mancha arrested on December 23 for staging a demonstration outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. The remaining seven protesters – all women – were granted bail on December 24, a day after their arrest.
They were asked to furnish a bond of ₹6,000 each with two registered sureties each of ₹3,000. The court directed that the accused meet the investigation officer thrice a week for the next four months, or till submission of the final report.
