An elderly woman was robbed of a gold chain by two unidentified men in a daylight chain snatching incident at a grocery shop in Shamshabad on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim, Sunkari Suvarna, 65, a resident of Palamakula village in Shamshabad, was present inside her son’s grocery shop when the incident was reported. Her son, Naresh, who runs the shop, had stepped out on work around 12.30 p.m., leaving her alone at the premises.
According to the police, the incident took place between 2 p.m. and 2.10 p.m. when two men arrived on a motorcycle and parked it at a short distance. One of them approached the shop and engaged the woman in conversation under the pretext of purchasing chewing gum.
After initially asking for one item and then changing his request, the man waited for the shopkeeper to turn her attention away. As she attempted to hand over the second item, he snatched the two-strand gold chain from her neck.
The victim tried to resist and held on to the chain, but the pendant along with a portion of the chain snapped off during the struggle. The accused fled on foot with the stolen portion and escaped on a motorcycle with his accomplice.
Police said the stolen gold pendant and chain fragment weigh approximately seven grams.
Based on the complaint, Shamshabad police registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the accused.
