ED conducts searches in Jharkhand, West Bengal amid crackdown on ‘coal mafia’

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Friday (November 21, 2025) morning began coordinated searches at more than 40 locations in West Bengal and Jharkhand, in connection with coal theft and mining cases in the two States.

Amid action against ‘coal mafia’ syndicates,over 100 ED officials and staffers were involved in the searches from 6 a.m. in the two States.

In Jharkhand, the agency is covering about 18 locations as part of the investigation related to coal theft and smuggling. Locations of entities named Anil Goyal, Sanjay Udhyog, L B Singh, and Amar Mandal are being covered, an official told The Hindu.

This apart, the ED is searching about 24 premises in West Bengal’s Durgapur, Purulia, Howrah, and Kolkata districts in the case of illegal mining, transportation and storage of coal. “The persons whose premises are being covered include Narendra Kharka, Yudhistar Ghosh, Krishna Murari Kayal, Chinmayi Mondal, Rajkishore Yadav and others,” the official added.
