In view of recurring cases of sale and consumption of narcotic substances in Mysuru, the city police have launched a programme titled ‘Vimukthi’, and released a WhatsApp helpline number (8277948080) for people to share information about the drug menace.

While police officials are visiting schools and colleges in Mysuru to create awareness about the harmful effects of the drug menace, the WhatsApp helpline number has been released to enable people to share information about instances of sale, transportation or consumption of narcotic substances in their surroundings.

While releasing the WhatsApp helpline number, the city police have assured to keep the identity of informants confidential.

The programme, titled Vimukthi with the slogan ‘A step towards a drug-free Mysuru’, seeks to keep the city free of drugs.

To ensure the success of the programme, police officers and staff have already visited schools and colleges in Mysuru to create awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

The awareness sessions as part of Vimukthi had already been held in 15 colleges, three schools and one park spread across 12 different police station jurisdictions, in co-ordination with the educational institutions.

About 1,750 students and 50 members of the public had participated in the programmes, according to the police.

Posters displaying the helpline number have been placed on notice boards and at entrances around school and college premises, and in public parks. People have been urged not to use narcotic substances, and to report any instances of drug abuse.

In the coming days, awareness programmes will be conducted in every school and college in the city, the police stated.
