The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M), Mysuru unit) has strongly opposed the recent hike in water tariff and sewerage charges implemented by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) from April 1, demanding that the decision be withdrawn immediately.

In a statement, the party argued that the increase would impose an additional financial burden on residents, who are already grappling with rising living costs.

Instead of raising tariffs, CPI(M) urged the MCC to prioritise improving civic infrastructure such as roads, streetlights, and other basic amenities within the city.

CPI(M) members staged a demonstration in Mysuru on Monday (April 6), pressing for a rollback of the revised water tariff and sewerage charges, which has been fixed at 40% of a water bill.

The party also criticised the slab-based tariff system for domestic consumers and opposed the imposition of a fixed monthly charge of ₹163 irrespective of water usage, calling it unjustified.

Highlighting the financial strain on citizens, CPI(M) leaders said residents are already burdened by recent increases in property tax. They termed the hike in water tariff and underground drainage (UGD) charges as “unscientific”.

Further, the party questioned the timing of the decision, noting that in the absence of an elected body in the MCC, such tariff hikes should not be implemented without proper debate and public consultation.
