Kozhikode District Congress Committee president K. Praveenkumar has accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] of facilitating the election of BJP councillor Vineetha Sajeevan as chairperson of the standing committee on Taxation and Appeal of the Kozhikode Corporation.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, he claimed that there had been no lapses on the part of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the filing of the nomination for the election or the voting procedure. It was left to the political party with the highest number of councillors, the CPI(M), to decide who should helm the standing committees.

The UDF was unofficially informed that it would get the chairperson’s post of only one standing committee. However, Mr. Praveenkumar claimed, the CPI(M) also helped the BJP get the chairperson’s post of the committee on Taxation and Appeal after its member abstained from voting. He alleged that this was part of an understanding between the CPI(M) and the BJP.
