The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that the redevelopment works at the Kozhikode railway station be completed within the stipulated timeframe, alleging that the slow pace of construction has caused severe inconvenience to passengers.

Inaugurating a protest march to the railway station organised by the CPI city committees in Kozhikode on Tuesday (July 14), CPI district secretary P. Gavas said the authorities should convene a meeting of all stakeholders and prepare a calendar to ensure the timely completion of the project.

Mr. Gavas said the redevelopment work, which began in June 2024 with a scheduled completion period of three years, had made little progress. According to him, not even 20% of the work has been completed so far. He alleged that only around 70 workers had been deployed at the site despite the requirement for about 500 workers.

The ongoing construction and partial demolition of the station have disrupted traffic and caused inconvenience to passengers, he said. The lack of adequate parking facilities has added to the hardship, affecting commuters as well as autorickshaw drivers, he added.

Mr. Gavas also sought a comprehensive probe into the recent collapse of the railway station’s clock tower. While welcoming the inquiry ordered by the Palakkad Railway Division, he said it was inadequate and alleged that the accident resulted from lapses on the part of both the contractor and the railway authorities.
