The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Social Justice department to consider favourably the demand to increase the annual income limit of families of children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes for them to be eligible for the Mittayi scheme.
The Mittayi scheme was launched in 2018 for providing free treatment and follow-up care to children with Type 1 diabetes. The current income limit is ₹2 lakh. Over 2,000 childen are enrolled in the scheme.
The Social Justice department informed the commission that when the State’s financial situation improves, it would consider raising the annual income limit.
The commission said the State unit of the National Health Mission should take steps for medicines for Type 1 diabetes to be made available to eligible persons above the age of 18.
The commission was told that nearly ₹6.79 crore was spent by the government on the Mittayi beneficiaries. An amount of ₹3.8 crore had been earmarked for the scheme this financial year.
The commission was acting on a complaint by Type One Diabetes Foundation general secretary Shihabudeen A.
