Citing lack of adequate number of guest lecturers, students of Government First Grade College and Government First Grade College for Women boycotted clasess in Dharwad on Saturday to register their protest.
The protest was staged in response to a call by the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) to condemn the delay in resolving the academic issues even after two months after the beginning of the academic year.
As part of the protests held separately, the students closed the gates of the colleges and held demonstrations seeking immediate steps to resolve the issue. They alleged that at a time when private colleges were conducting internal examinations, the students of government colleges were not even having regular classes.
Addressing the protesters, district secretary of AIDSO Shashikala Meti said that as per the academic calendar, in some universities, including Davangere University, the semester examinations were scheduled to begin in October or November. But in many government colleges, the classes were yet to be conducted on a regular basis, she said.
She urged the government to immediately postpone the scheduled examinations and hold the examinations only after proper classes were conducted and syllabus was completed by the lecturers.
She also sought to know whether the State universities were meant only for the private colleges.
