Mr. Masood described the death of the Iranian leader as a “sad event” and personally conveyed his sympathies during the meeting.

“I had gone there to give my condolences on the death of their supreme leader. It was Iran which has stood with us in testing times. India and Iran share historical relations which are centuries old. The world has lost a courageous leader. History will remember him as a valiant figure, one who, despite facing numerous limitations, endeavoured to develop his nation. The passing of such an individual is undoubtedly a profound loss. I was told that the late Supreme Leader knew more about India than many other educated and capable people,” he said.

“He was an exceptionally knowledgeable and competent individual who had a profound understanding of India,” told Mr. Masood told The Hindu.

In a related development Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament for Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, described the killing of a sitting head of state in the midst of ongoing negotiations as marking a grave rupture in contemporary international relations.

“The killing of a sitting head of state in the midst of ongoing negotiations marks a grave rupture in contemporary international relations. Yet, beyond the shock of the event, what stands out equally starkly is New Delhi’s silence,” wrote Ms. Vadra on X.
