The Indian National Congress (INC) in Kozhikode has announced its candidates for the district panchayat seats even before the declaration of dates for the local body polls. The District Congress Committee (DCC) announced the names of seven out of the 14 candidates for the Kozhikode district panchayat on Saturday (November 8).

There are 28 divisions in the Kozhikode district panchayat, of which the Congress is contesting in 14, while the other seats will be shared with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and other parties under the United Democratic Front (UDF) banner locally. The Congress has already announced candidates for Edacheri, Kayakkodi, Meppayyur, Chathamangalam, Kakkodi, Balusseri and Kakkoor divisions, while the remaining candidates are expected to be announced by Tuesday (November 11).

Among the candidates announced are former Deputy Director of Education T. Valsalakumari (Edacheri), Kayakkodi panchayat vice president Sajisha Edukkudi (Kayakkodi), DCC general secretaries Muneer Eravath (Meppayur), and Abdurahman Edakkuni (Chathamangalam), KSU unit vice president Vinayadas N.K. Kuttamboor (Kakkodi), State general secretary of Dalit Congress V.S. Abhilash (Balusseri), and Youth Congress leader Sudhin Suresh (Kakkoor).

DCC president K. Praveen Kumar said the Congress in Kozhikode was the first in the State to announce candidates.

Meanwhile, discussions are on regarding candidates for the 76 divisions of the Kozhikode Corporation. The Congress is contesting in 49 seats, while 25 seats have been allocated to the IUML and two to the Communist Marxist Party. The DCC president said that a partial candidate list would be published on Monday (November 10).
