The Congress on Friday (May 29, 2026) accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of displaying “extreme moral cowardice” through his alleged support for Israel and said his position amounted to a “betrayal” of India’s longstanding values and foreign policy principles.

The Opposition party’s criticism came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly remarked at a conference in the West Bank that Israel faced delegitimisation across the world “except in India”.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Mr. Netanyahu’s remark reflected the views of “Prime Minister Modi’s ecosystem and not India as a whole.”

He alleged that Mr. Modi had failed to condemn Israel’s actions in the region, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the bombing of Lebanon, and the displacement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

“Mr. Modi has stood out as Mr. Netanyahu’s strongest supporter. Israel is embedded in the Modani conglomerate. He has been demonstrating extreme moral cowardice, and his stance is a betrayal of all that India stands for. It is shameful and unacceptable to crores of Indians,” the Congress leader said.

Mr. Ramesh said the Prime Minister also maintained a silence over the assassination of Iran’s head of state and other senior leaders.
