Conference on genetics and epigenetics of cancer inaugurated at Mysuru’s JSS Medical College

The second ‘International Conference on Genetics and Epigenetics of Cancer’ (ICGEC-2) with a focused theme on ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches’ was inaugurated at the JSS Medical College, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (AHER) here on Thursday.

L.S. Shashidhara, Director, National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the conference.

Jamboor K. Vishwanatha, president, Institute of Health Disparities, University of North Texas Health Science Centre, USA; C.G. Betsurmath, executive secretary, JSS Mahavidyapeetha; H. Basavana Gowdappa, vice-chancellor, JSS AHER; D. Narayanappa, principal, JSS Medical College; and K.A. Raveesha, dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, School of Life Sciences, JSS AHER; were present.

Guru Kumar, convenor and organising secretary, briefed about the theme and scope of the conference. Dr. Gowdappa made the opening remarks addressing the importance of the thematic area of the conference.

Dr. Shashidhara spoke about genetics and epigenetics of cancer in prognosis and diagnosis among the patient community. Dr. Vishwanatha highlighted the importance of AI in cancer genetics and genomics.

At the two-day conference, there will be discussions and deliberations on various topics focusing on cancer biology, molecular epidemiology of cancer, cancer epigenetics mechanism, and cancer stem cells and therapeutics.

Eminent speakers from international (University of North Texas Health Science Centre, USA) and national institutions (NCBS, Indian Institute of Science, IIT Mandi, IIT Madras, IISER Pune, IISER Kolkata, CCMB Hyderabad, and Delhi University) will be delivering expert lectures in the conference.

In addition, the conference features oral and poster presentations to share knowledge and promote the exchange of research ideas among participants. Researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical industry experts will be participating and sharing their views and expertise. The conference is supported in part by the Department of Science and Technology – Anusandhan National Research Foundation, Government of India, a press release said.

The conference aims to create awareness and educate individuals about newer developments in cancer research with the Indian Council of Medical Research taking up several public health and research programmes. Many institutions are joining these initiatives to spread awareness in the society, the press release added.
