Neurosurgeons in a corporate hospital here — KIMS Saveera Hospital — have successfully performed a complex, six-hour surgery to treat a rare arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the brain of a 47-year-old farmer.

A farmer from Kanekallu, Pakirappa, arrived at KIMS Saveera Hospital after experiencing sudden, severe headaches and altered sensorium. Diagnostic imaging revealed he was suffering from an AVM — a rare vascular condition affecting one in every one lakh individuals — in which abnormal connections between arteries and veins dangerously bypass the normal capillary system within the brain.

“AVMs can be life-threatening if untreated, as the swollen veins are at constant risk of rupture, causing internal bleeding,” explained consultant neurosurgeon C. Anil. “In Mr. Pakirappa’s case, the malformation was located near vital areas controlling speech and movement, making the surgery particularly challenging.”

A team led by Dr. Anil and Dr. Murali utilized advanced microsurgical techniques and real-time intraoperative monitoring to safely remove the tangled vessels and restore normal blood flow to the brain. Following the intricate procedure, Mr. Pakirappa made a rapid and complete recovery, regaining his speech and mobility. He was discharged just five days later, able to resume his daily activities independently. “Many patients with AVMs may not realize they have the condition until sudden, severe symptoms appear,” said Dr. Murali. “Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are critical in preventing life-threatening complications,” he added.
