Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi flagged off a road safety awareness rally near new bus terminus, off the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) in Vellore on Tuesday as part of National Road Safety Awareness Month.

Accompanied by the Superintendent of Police (SP) A. Myilvaganan, Ms. Subbulaxmi also spoke to a few motorists, who did not wear helmets, about the dangers of head injuries.

The rally brought together more than 200 bikers, who are mostly students and police personnel. They carried placards with messages such as ‘Don’t drink and drive’ and ‘Wear helmet’, and raised slogans on road safety, drawing the attention of passers-by and motorists along the route.

The rally navigated through key stretches near Katpadi, Old Town before ending at Gandhi statue inside the fort complex. The aim was to emphasize the life-saving importance of wearing helmets, especially for two-wheeler riders.

The initiative includes the distribution of free helmets by the district police for a week to riders found travelling without protective headgear to highlight the importance of helmets. Police said that they hope this move will not only serve as a deterrent but also as a direct intervention to save lives.
