Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 13.5 km long four-lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on East Coast Road (ECR) at a cost of ₹2,100 crore. Minister for Highways E.V. Velu was also present during the event held near the Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur.

The facility, that will take three years to be constructed, will allow motorists to avoid waiting for traffic signals for 130 side roads that join ECR. “Despite widening it into six lanes, traffic is still slow on the ECR as hundreds of vehicles pour out on the highway from interior residential areas. The stretch witnesses around 70,000 vehicles a day. This is why we need an elevated corridor on this road,” explained an official.
