Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) directed officials concerned to immediately submit a detailed report of damages due to flood in Bihar.

He issued the direction during a review meeting in which Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin and both Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were present along with other officials.

Mr. Choudhary said that a severe flood situation arose this year due to an unprecedented volume of water flowing into the Ganga, Gandak, and Son rivers compared to previous years. He pointed out that the accumulation of silt in riverbeds is a primary reason for river flooding.

He added that Bihar is the first State in the country to have formulated a silt policy. The Chief Minister directed that the current status of rivers and the damage caused by floods be continuously monitored.

“A detailed preliminary report on the flood damage should be submitted immediately so that relief, rehabilitation, and necessary development works in the affected areas can be expedited, “Mr. Choudhary said.

He also instructed the DMD to obtain assessments of the flood damage and the costs required for restoration from all concerned departments and submit a report at the earliest.

Mr. Choudhary also directed that necessary arrangements be ensured to address potential issues arising after the drainage of water from the flood-affected areas. He mentioned that in the second phase, compensation amounts would be transferred to the flood-affected families on October 12, 2026.

Chandrashekhar Singh, Secretary of the Water Resources Department (WRD), briefed about the causes and situation arising from the two phases of flooding in Bihar. He explained that during the first phase, new peak water levels were recorded in the Ganga, Son, Ghaghara, Kosi, and Punpun rivers, surpassing previous highs.

Mr. Singh added that, in the second phase, peak water levels were recorded at four locations along the Gandak River due to excessive rainfall. He also informed that embankments were damaged at six locations across West Champaran, Gopalganj, and Saran districts. Santosh Kumar Mall, Principal Secretary of the Disaster Management Department (DMD), provided details on the relief and rescue operations conducted during the floods.

Earlier in the day, during the ‘Yuva Samvad’ (Youth Dialogue) programme in Rohtas, Mr. Choudhary attacked the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi. He claimed that anti-incumbency does not work against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whereas every attempt by the Congress to launch Rahul Gandhi has failed.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth ₹400 crore in Rohtas district.
