The Kengeri police on January 19 arrested a 32-year-old civil engineer for allegedly cheating a software engineer of ₹1.53 crore by promising to marry her while concealing the fact that he was already married.

The accused has been identified as Vijesh B. alias Vijay Raj Gowda, a native of Kunigal in Tumakuru district.

According to the police, the accused came in contact with the 29-year-old victim, a resident of Whitefield, through a matrimonial website in March 2024. He allegedly projected himself as a successful businessman, claiming to own “VRG Enterprises” and boasting of a personal wealth of ₹715 crore.

To gain her trust, Vijesh reportedly introduced the woman to his father, Boregowda, and on one occasion introduced his wife Soumya, falsely claiming that she was his sister.

He later told the victim that his assets had been frozen due to an alleged Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe and persuaded her to help him financially.

Police said the accused coerced the woman into availing loans and transferring money to him. In total, he allegedly took ₹1.75 crore, of which only ₹22 lakh was returned. When the victim demanded repayment of the remaining amount, Vijesh allegedly threatened her.

The fraud came to light when the woman visited the accused’s house and discovered that he was married to Soumya and had a child.

“He is married and has a child. We are investigating whether his wife and father, who have been named in the FIR, were also involved in the offence. If their involvement is established, appropriate legal action will be initiated,” an investigating officer said .
