Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Saturday inspected the ongoing work for the ₹15 crore sports complex in Tirupattur.

Along with Collector K. Sivasoundaravalli, and Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu, Mr. Stalin inspected the sports complex area. “The new facility will encourage youngsters in diverse sports activities in the district to compete at the State and national level competitions. The new facility will be ready in 2026,” R. Jayakumari, District Sports Officer (Tirupattur), told The Hindu.

Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), which executes the work, said that until now, sports activities at the district level were conducted in colleges that have playgrounds. Most of the playgrounds do not have modern facilities, training areas, civic amenities for sportspersons and visitors. “The new sports complex will help young sportspersons to train themselves throughout the year,” said B. Santhosh, a student.

Spread over 10 acres, the new sports complex, which will be maintained by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) will be built on the temple land of HRCE. The new complex will have a spectator’s gallery with a seating capacity of over 3,500 to watch football games and athletic events.

The new sports facility will have eight separate tracks for 400 metres athletics training, two courts each for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, kabaddi, football. Javelin throw can also be practiced at the facility.

Among civic amenities, the new facility will have an administrative block, separate accommodation and changing rooms for sportspersons, washrooms, water taps, CCTV cameras, and a modern gym. Parking facilities for two-wheelers, cars, and buses will be provided. Rainwater harvesting system and storm water drains will be built.

Unlike other district sports complexes, the new facility in Tirupattur will have an open-air theatre where award ceremonies, video presentations by coaches, and other events can be done. Around 200 persons can be accommodated in the theatre. Landscaping will be done and a hockey stadium will also be built.
