The Hebbagodi police have arrested a 27-year-old chicken shop employee who allegedly burgled the house of his distant relative and stole jewellery worth ₹47 lakh to gift to his female friend.

The accused, Shreyas, allegedly broke into the house on September 14 when the family was out of town. An elderly woman stayed behind, but she had gone to a nearby shop to buy groceries when the accused broke into the house and escaped with the valuables .

He had allegedly created an alibi and avoided CCTV camera-covered areas. The accused even accompanied the family to file a complaint, keeping a close watch on the developments.

However, over the course of the investigation, the police became suspicious of his behaviour and picked him up for questioning, during which he allegedly confessed. Based on his confession, the police have allegedly recovered the valuables which he had pawned and bought jewels for his friend in Bannerghatta. The woman, his former classmate, was married and later separated and came in contact with him.

The police subsequently recovered 416 grams of jewellery and cash worth ₹3.46 lakh. The suspect has been remanded in judicial custody.
