The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to upgrade 80 km of roads across three localities — Perambur-Vyasarpadi neighbourhood, Ambattur and Guindy Industrial Estates — for roughly ₹1.18 crore under comprehensive infrastructure projects.

This involves road reconstruction, junction improvements, public transit integration, stormwater drainage upgrades, inclusive footpaths, urban greening, revenue-generating avenues, and energy-efficient lighting, according to the GCC. These are expected to be compliant with the Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.

According to sources in the GCC, the plan to scale up entire neighbourhoods, instead of parks and roads separately is for a ‘holistic approach and transformation’. Further areas will also be done in the coming days, sources said.

The Perambur-Vyasarpadi neighbourhood project will upgrade 20 km of streets within a 15 sq. km. study area in Zones IV and VI. Identified as a priority under the Urban Challenge Fund, the area contains dense residential and industrial zones. The project cost is ₹47.20 lakh.

In the Ambattur Industrial Estate, spanning 1,167 acres with roughly 1,800 industries, the project covers a 40-km road network. The estate currently features 128 roads measuring 42.58 km, 240 stormwater drains extending 40 km, and 1,890 streetlights. The consultancy cost is ₹47.20 lakh.

The Guindy Industrial Estate project focuses on a 20-km road network. The 404.08-acre estate houses around 700 industries, featuring 82 roads spanning 15.28 km, and 23.5 km of stormwater drains. The consultancy cost is ₹23.60 lakh.

Both industrial estate projects would follow a Memorandum of Understanding between the GCC and the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation Limited.

For this, the GCC intends to appoint multidisciplinary consultancy firms or consortiums to prepare a ‘detailed street infrastructure upgradation plan, design and implementation strategy’ for the three areas.

The plan must include improvements to mobility, drainage, public realm, environmental improvements, and revenue-generating interventions.
